The Place

Situated in historic Hanover Square, The Evergreen is a craft beer bar and restaurant with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. In addition to a selection of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options on their regular menu, they offer weekly soup and veggie specials. They order 1 keg of any beer at a time, so that their 20 taps are always rotating- bringing you the newest and freshest beer around.

Chef Jonah Schmelling says, “I have worked in a few vegan kitchens and love cooking vegan food.” Vegan food has a special place in Jonah’s heart and he finds it challenging and exciting. “Recipes and ideas come from lots of experimenting throughout the years. The carrot fritters are an adaptation of a recipe from my favorite food blogger, The Minimalist Baker. I’m always working with some weird ingredient and figuring how to sneak vegan options into people’s food.”

The Food

Currently, The Evergreen’s menu offers up an entirely vegan carrot fritter with tofu ricotta (see below photo of these beauties taken by Chef Jonah, himself), as an appetizer, which is also gluten free. About half of their menu items are marked as vegetarian and most of them are vegan upon request. Some those items include cauliflower wings, Buffalo or blackened tofu sandwich, Beet and grain burger, ALT sandwich, and a handful of salads. The vegetable of the day is often vegetarian or vegan. This weekend for brunch, Chef Jonah and his crew will be offering a tofu scramble with house-made tempeh sausage: available *this* Sunday, August 26 from 11 am- 3pm.

The Evergreen has hosted multiple course vegan dinners for the Syracuse Vegans Meet Up group and has also been known to create a few special items for events (note, they are no longer renting out the space for private parties-see the Rail Line for private event options).

Now serving dinner 7 days, lunch on Saturday, and brunch on Sundays. Happy hour is 4-6pm every day, Trivia Tuesdays (with $3 All Day IPA tallboys) and game nights Wednesdays.
